Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition that honors the deceased members of families on November first and second, All Saint's and All Soul's Day. Elaborate altars are erected in homes with pictures, favorite foods and earthly items of the dead family member. It is believed that souls return home for one night to enjoy the company of the living before going back to the land of the dead. The digital pictures in this small book were taken at a Dia de los Muertos celebration in San Diego at Sherman Community Center in November of 1999.

35mm Film Canister Pinhole Camera Images
3 1/4 x 1 5/8 x 1 3/8 • Edition of 10
$150.00

The photos in this book were made with a pinhole camera made from a 35mm film canister. The pinhole was made from an aluminum beverage can.

Some of the images include my house, my desk, San Diego bay, a worm's-eye-view of a dead talapia on the shore of the Salton Sea, a row of mailboxes near Ramona, CA.

A washer and nut were epoxied to the bottom of the film canister to allow tripod mounting. Images were recorded on photographic paper in exposures that ranged from 10 seconds to two minutes. The paper was processed in black and white chemicals to produce a negative which was scanned, reversed and flipped in Photoshop. Prints were printed on a color laser printer and glued onto flattened 35mm HP-5 film casettes which act as pages.
