Summer • 2003

Two grandmothers and three granddaughters brought their lunches, cookies and overflowing enthusiasm to the Art Retreat to experience a day of fun and creativity. The girls and their grammas put on aprons and began the day in Al¹s studio by making beautiful, colorful pastepapers. (³It¹s kinda¹ like finger painting, gramma.²) Then, after cookies and water, on to Josie¹s studio for a collage session where they covered a small foamcore box with whimsical images. Lunch was a welcome opportunity for the adults to rest. For the girls, a time to gobble their sandwiches and say, "What¹s next?" After lunch, back to Al¹s studio for a lesson on origami boxes which the girls made with their own pastepapers. A accordion fold book with pastepaper-covered hard covers, tied with a ribbon which fit into the origami box was the next project. We ended the day by making pop-up cards. The grandmothers and their granddaughters had a joyful time and left with delightful items and cherished memories.

The "Mangia" sisters spent a full day, giggling, ooh-ing and awe-ing and praising each other¹s work as they met here from three different parts of the country for a day-long workshop. The first activity was a marbling session that left them amazed at the beautiful patterns they produced. ("I never knew that this could be so easy!") After lunch, we used their marbled paper to make some gorgeous little books. ("These would make wonderful little gifts!")

They were happy to be together in a non-competitive environment and thrilled with their creations. ("The whole day was fun end. Thank you for a wonderful time.")

The Murphy sisters arranged a day-long workshop with their 80-something-year-old mom. ("I¹m going to keep an open mind.") Two of the sisters wanted to do pastepaper and went with Al, the other sister and mom chose collage and worked with Josie.

After lunch ("What a great lunch!") one sister, an English teacher, decided to make some books--something that she could use in the classroom with her students. Al and she had a one-on-one session where she made several book structures which would lend themselves to literacy in the classroom. ("I¹m going to try these projects on Monday--they¹re gong to wonder what I did over the weekend!") Josie helped the others as they continued their collage projects. All the girls had a great time including mom who did keep an open mind.
